Fail at blogging

Wow, I fail at keeping a blog current. So, what has happened since the LAST update almost a year ago...

Hey, it's still here...

Well, it has been far too long since I've done any updating on this. Some of this I blame on Facebook..after all, why update a blog when I can just do a short blurb for Facebook and not have to exercise my vocabulary and bore people with verbosity. I've probably since lost my one or two readers, but, talking to myself is nothing new.

Changes to the site

Hey all, my one or two readers may notice that I'm doing some changes to the site. I noticed with my trip to Lake Tahoe that I developed a serious case of verbal diarrhea which made some of the entries really long. Well, the blog has the ability to shorten the entries so that a smaller summary is at the top and the longer entry is available to those who need a nap and want more bedtime reading. So, I'm going back and re-editing some old entries, as well as making use of the categorizing function to sort the entries into other more locatable categories. Nothing else will change content wise, it'll just be a little more compact on first inspection. It will take a little time to get everything edited, but eventually it'll be done.

One Hundred Pushups Update

So, I started the one-hundred pushups thing, then Japan happened, and a whole pile of other things have happened, but I haven't forgotten about this, and I really do intend on getting back to it. I've recovered from my trip, so there's no excuse there, some of the other things that have been going on in my life have finally calmed down a little (this was my first really "free" weekend where I didn't have a whole lot of things I had to get done.) So, I think it's time I get back to it and get back on schedule with this. With so much time having passed, I'm going to start over from the beginning and see where I stand again.

I'll be posting updates as I go along again.

Site moving

Looks like my gracious host (and no, I'm not being sarcastic, he's hosting my site for free and has been maintaining everything in the background...I owe him at least a 6pack of or two of his choice...:) ) is moving sites around again, so the blog may be unavailable for a bit while the move is done and DNS re-propagates. Just a warning for everyone.

100 Pushups - Week 2

Well, week 2 went without any issues. As in week 1, the rest periods for me seemed longer than necessary, but, I can tell things are getting just a little easier each time. Unfortunately I'll be off for the next 2 weeks so I may end up starting over, but we'll see what I can do.

100 Pushups - Week 1

Ok, so I didn't get started on this as soon as I would have liked, but I've officially started now.

My initial test was pathetic, and only served to reinforce the fact that, yes, I am pathetically out of shape. Definitely a rank 1 starter.

I'm finding that the hardest thing to do is to maintain good form throughout the push-up. Like most people I suspect, my butt either wants to lag or lead. I have a harder time keeping everything lined up, but, I'm still working at it. The first day went surprisingly easily, with the rest periods longer than I needed for recovery. Day 2 went easier than expected, given how my body felt, but again, the rest periods seemed longer than I needed. I also found that for whatever reason, it was a little easier to hold form (though by no means is it perfect). Day Three is coming up.

I'll have more updates as I progress.

One Hundred Pushups

So, I was surfing about, when this link caught my eye. Normally I ignore a lot of the flotsam and jetsam that is served up while I'm searching for other things, but something drew me to this link so I checked it out.

Happy Thanksgiving!

The first American Thanksgiving was in celebration of survival and friendship according to history. Survival for the people who came on the Mayflower with a large and bountiful harvest, and friendship with the local Native Americans who helped and taught them how to survive in a strange new land. Many cultures used to celebrate the end of the harvest season with a festival.

Sony/BMG Music

Dunno if any of you have been keeping track of this, but Sony/BMG music thought it would be a clever way to keep piraters from copying their music by introducing a small program that would copy itself to your computer when you put the CD in to rip it, and limit the number of times you could access the CD for ripping etc. Sounds great at first, but a couple of problems come up pretty fast: First off, they don't tell you that they're loading programs to your computer, and second, they hide the loaded program so you can't tell that it's there without doing some pretty sophisticated snooping. Third, they don't give you the option of removing or NOT having the program loaded. You put the CD in, it loads the program to your drive, whether or not you want it to or not.

Been a while

Sorry for the long delay between posts. I've been utterly swamped for the past month so unfortunately the blog has been on the back burner for a bit. But, my schedule seems to be opening up a least until the holidays hit.

Anyway, saw this article today regarding the possible first documented use of sonic weaponry in combat. Very interesting implications.

Monster Manor II

OK, definitely come check out the Haunt if you can. As I've done for the past few years, I'm volunteering as part of the Security crew for the Haunt. This gives me access to all areas of the Haunt, and having walked through it a few times, it's definitely well done again this year.

Monster Manor

While I'm thinking about it. For those of you in the San Diego area, head out one of these weekends to the Mira Mesa Monster Manor! It's a rocking good haunt that donates it's profits to help fund the Mira Mesa Fireworks shows each year. Each year it has gotten bigger and better, and this year promises to be excellent!

More testing

Just practicing uploading files and getting the thumbnails right.

Here's a picture of a friends cat "Yoda" catching a snooze in a shopping bag after having terrorized it (the bag) for a while.

We're live...

Well, we finally got the DNS working as it should so is now live!

Welcome to the blog!

The major purpose behind this is to blog an upcoming trip to Japan. Why? Seemed like an interesting idea. It is also sort of a long term practice run for a dream trip to Alaska I'm planning. We shall see.

Why Japan? Well my dojo is going to visit the main dojo in Japan for its 30th anniversary. That, and it's a good excuse to show a few friends around Japan who have never been.

One of these days I'll get this all combined to one site, but there's another site I have up with some hints for the novice traveller to Japan. There's also some old photos and such posted on that site as well.

Oh, and while I'm at it...don't forget to visit Jorge's site.

wtf is Genthar?

Ok, before those of you who don't know me ask the question:
Genthar is a random collection of syllables that I put together as a name for my first DnD character. (way back in the '80's) (for those of you who are REALLY geeky, he was a fighter/thief 9/12 under 2nd ed. rules.)

The name has no particular meaning that I am aware of, and I've used it as a handle for many years now, so that was why I used that as the URL for this. (well, that and I couldn't think of anything else on short notice.)

As for why I didn't use my last name or something, well, there's a major sporting goods company who has that name all locked up. Unfortunately, there's no direct relation between that company and my family that I'm aware of.

Test Post with Image

Canyon Sunset.jpg

Ok, here's a test post with an image, after all the primary reason I wanted to set up a blog was to be able to share images from trips. This is a black and white image of the Grand Canyon I took a few years ago and scanned into the computer via flatbed scanner.

Thanks Jorge

Before I get too far along in testing and fiddling, I should thank Jorge for setting this up on relatively short notice. So...Thanks a lot, Jorge! As for why he had to set it up rather than me setting it up...well, the short of it is I was having hardware issues on the box that I wanted to use for this, and I ran out of time (and brain cells) to troubleshoot and still have a page up and running in time for the Japan trip.

Jorge was kind enough in the midst of his own busy schedule to whip this up for me on his box, so that I could attempt to use this for the Japan trip. Given the short amount of time until the trip (we fly out Oct 1) I doubt this page will get much fancier in the near term, unless Jorge gets a wild hair. I'll see about sprucing it up a bit, but, don't hold your breath...between prepping for the trip and everything else going on, plus the fact that I have to learn what and how to modify this thing, get the idea.

And yes, this is a precursor to a future trip to Alaska that I still want to do. It's looking like 2007-2008 at the earliest for that trip, but sooner or later I WILL make that trip.
